Facebook/Instagram

Social media is another area of our daily lives which has changed with the help of technology. Facebook and Instagram are two of the largest platforms people are using today to stay in touch with family and friends. Social media platforms are able to help shape and change cultural norms and people have grown because of them. Facebook is a great place to connect with people while sharing photos or short blogs about anything that interests them. Instagram is better for phot sharing needs, but it is still a way to keep up with people in a different way, by basically seeing highlights of their lives through photos. These two platforms have been able to change culture norms since people are able to change and adapt to the group of people seeing their content. “Culture has a powerful influence on behavioral patterns and thinking styles. One important influence of culture on daily life is on the display rules that guide emotional expressions” (Liu, Chan, Qiu, Tov, & Tong, 2018). Social media, like Facebook and Instagram have helped shape our culture but also our culture has changed the way people are posting. A younger generation is posting their opinions but are also more outspoken then before. 

Instagram is a great place for people to show pictures of their lives and their adventures. Often times though they are showing an ideal version of themselves which is a false image from who they really are. This has caused some issues with how people view these images because often times they become jealous about what someone else is doing. 

 

“The news correspondents obtained a quote from the research from the Flinders University of South Australia, "Participants were 128 female undergraduate students who viewed a set of attractive images paired with a brief positive comment. For half the participants, comments were related to appearance; the other half viewed the same images with place related comments. As predicted, exposure to appearance comments led to greater body dissatisfaction than exposure to place comments. There was no significant effect on state self-objectification, but trait self-objectification predicted increase in body dissatisfaction regardless of experimental condition." (Tiggemann, & Barbato, 2018). 

 

Instagram is a great tool in order for people to make connections, but it also has its negative effects. Like most social media platforms, there is an air of negativity as well because everyone wants the perfect body and the perfect life. Perfection doesn’t exist but through social media people believe it does. Facebook and Instagram are places for connection and showing your life to those around you. They have their good qualities and their bad, which has helped shape our culture and shape how people interact.
