Continuing the Journey

November 16, 2020

You can find almost any piece of information online, which means there is less of a need for certain kinds of communication. In many ways people gave forgotten what interaction is like when it is face-to-face and often times people will prefer digital communication over in person communication. “But in so many simple ways, we are forgetting whom we are communicating with, which is to say people and not screens” (Quora, 2017). New technologies like social media have shaped these new interactions because they have created opportunities for instant messaging and commenting on other’s posts. These comments are their new way of communication. You may be asking what are some of the major social media platforms people are using? “The most commonly used social media platforms today are Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Snapchat” (Lewison, 2020). Social media has created a lack of emotional response when two people are interacting and since billions of people are on social media daily, it has become the largest way to communicate. Young adults and adults are using social media the most bur it has also affect the way younger audience talk to each other as well. Younger generations are learning these digital communication habits from their parents creating a lack of in-person communication. Through technology, people are becoming more impatient to hear from the person they sent a message to, they want a response right away. Social media has also created an environment of sharing. Social media has created a feeling among users that they must share whatever they are doing- from restaurant orders, to concerts, to the books they are reading” (Lewison, 2020). By needing to share every detail of your life, you are hindering what you are able to share with those closest to you. This creates a lack of bonding between two people if you are constantly sharing your life on social media.

For me, I am using social media as much as the next person, which means I see it every day. I have started to create my own branding, which is a clean, fun image. My website is a reflection of this as well, but I truly like to be able to connect with people in a person way. My branding reflects that because I post important events in my life, which are sometimes far and few. By only posting about important events, I feel like people are able to really see what I am like. I always try to post “real” things, aka things that truly happened in my life. Technology has helped create an environment where you are able to talk to friends or relatives you might not see on a daily basis. As you create content you should think about potential ethical dilemmas and there are many organizations who have created ethical guidelines professionals can, and should, follow. One ethical handbook I really like is the NPR Ethical Handbook which goes into detailed principles, such as accuracy, fairness, completeness, honesty, independence, impartiality, transparency, accountability, respect, excellence (NPR Ethical Handbook, 2019). With these ethical guidelines from NPR, anyone can look towards these codes when creating, or curating, content on social media. There are many social media platforms which utilize different tools to help users show off their content. Twitter has changed over the years and truly pushes for users to utilize hashtags because they are a quick and easy way to find specific posts. You can use hashtags on other platforms, but they work the best on Twitter. Instagram is the best platform for photo sharing and commenting. Both of these platforms, and others, can be utilized for branding needs, one just needs to know what their target audience responses to best. Businesses are able to advertise on each platform, just in their own unique way. Businesses just need realize what works best for their particular audience and utilize that platform!
